What is fennel oil?
Fennel oil is an aromatic essential oil from Foeniculum vulgare. The PureOil® variant is made via steam distillation of fennel seeds and originates from India/Egypt. The scent is sweet, spicy, and distinctly anise-like.
How is fennel oil made?
The seeds are processed via steam distillation. The volatile aromatic compounds are carried by the steam and then separated as concentrated oil.
What does fennel oil smell like?
Fennel has a sweet, anise-like scent that is easily recognizable and quite dominant. Therefore, use sparingly in blends.
Fennel oil in aromatherapy
Use primarily as a fragrance component. Traditional applications regarding digestion or hormones are not a reason to use fennel essential oil internally yourself. This guide is exclusively about external and aromatic use.
Diffuser
Start with one drop and optionally combine with citrus, lavender, ginger, or a woody oil.
Scent combinations
Mandarin or bergamot make fennel lighter; lavender softens the sweet anise notes; ginger makes the blend warmer.
Fennel oil for the skin
Use only diluted and at a low dosage. The oil requires extra caution during pregnancy, with young children, and in hormone-sensitive situations. Follow product-specific safety information.
Fennel oil for massage
When you want to use fennel for its scent in a massage blend, choose a low concentration in jojoba or almond oil.
Quality and storage
Check for Foeniculum vulgare oil, steam distillation, and dark packaging. Store in a cool, dark place and keep tightly closed.
Safety
Do not use internally based on this guide, dilute for skin use, and be extra cautious during pregnancy or in hormone-sensitive circumstances.
