What is garlic oil?
PureOil® Garlic Oil requires an important distinction. According to the product page, it is an oil infusion of garlic bulbs, described as Allium sativum oil in an oil base. Therefore, it is not wise to automatically equate this form of the product with a classic steam-distilled essential oil.
The scent is powerful, spicy, and characteristic. As a result, garlic oil is usually used sparingly, for example in hair or scalp routines or as an ingredient in an oil blend.
How is garlic oil made?
The PureOil® product information describes an oil infusion of garlic bulbs with India as the origin. In an infusion, components and fragrance from the plant material are absorbed into an oily base. This results in a different composition, texture, and method of use than a pure volatile essential oil.
What does garlic oil smell like?
The scent is strong, savory, spicy, and very recognizable. Therefore, use small amounts. Those who find the scent too intense can combine the oil with a more neutral carrier oil such as jojoba or grapeseed.
Garlic oil for hair
Garlic is often linked online to claims about hair growth. There is no strong clinical evidence for guaranteed hair growth from a cosmetic garlic oil. Therefore, use the oil as a care product, not as a treatment for hair loss.
For the hair ends
Use one small drop mixed with jojoba or argan and distribute only through the ends if you find the scent pleasant.
For the scalp
Use a small amount in a larger carrier oil blend. Massage briefly and then wash out. Stop in case of burning, redness, or itching.
Garlic oil for the skin
Garlic components can be irritating to some people. Therefore, use sparingly and always perform a patch test first. Avoid damaged skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
Combining with other oils
Jojoba and grapeseed are logical neutral bases. For hair, you can also use argan. By mixing a smaller amount of garlic oil into a larger amount of carrier oil, the scent and texture become milder.
Practical routine for hair
For example, mix one part garlic oil with three to five parts jojoba. Apply a small amount to the lengths of the hair or the scalp, leave on briefly, and wash out thoroughly. Always start with a lower concentration if your skin is sensitive.
What can you realistically expect?
An oil can moisturize and condition hair and skin, but it does not replace a diagnosis or treatment for hair loss, eczema, infections, or other medical problems. In case of sudden or persistent hair loss, it is wise to have possible causes examined.
Quality and storage
Check the actual ingredient list and product form. Store in a cool, dark place and keep well closed. The strong garlic scent is characteristic, but a clearly rancid or off-putting oil odor may indicate a loss of quality.
Safe use
Use sparingly, avoid eyes, mucous membranes, and damaged skin, and stop if irritation occurs. Use the product according to the label; this guide does not advise internal use.
