What is sandalwood oil?
Sandalwood oil is an essential oil from Santalum album. The PureOil® variant is produced via steam distillation of sandalwood and the product information lists India/Australia as the origin. The scent is warm, soft woody, creamy and slightly sweet.
Sandalwood is one of the best-known base notes in perfumery and aromatic blends. Unlike volatile citrus oils, the scent remains present for a relatively long time and can round off sharper or lighter aromas.
How is sandalwood oil made?
The aromatic wood is steam distilled. The volatile components are carried along by the steam and separated as oil after condensation. Because true sandalwood trees grow slowly, origin, traceability and responsible use of raw materials are important quality aspects.
What does sandalwood smell like?
The scent is warm, soft, woody, creamy and subtly sweet. Sandalwood is less dry than cedarwood and less earthy than patchouli. As a result, it combines easily with citrus, florals, resins and other types of wood.
Sandalwood oil in aromatherapy
Use sandalwood primarily for scent experience. The warm base note fits well into a calm evening routine, meditation or massage. This does not mean that the oil medically treats anxiety, insomnia or other conditions.
In the diffuser
Use a few drops according to the manual. Sandalwood can be used pure in a simple scent setting or combined with bergamot, lavender, rose, jasmine, patchouli or frankincense.
Scent combinations
Fresh & warm
Bergamot with sandalwood provides a bright start and soft woody base.
Floral
Lavender, rose or jasmine are made rounder and warmer by sandalwood.
Deep & resinous
Frankincense, myrrh or patchouli together with sandalwood provide a deep base blend.
Sandalwood oil for the skin
Use sandalwood essential oil only diluted in a suitable carrier oil. Jojoba is a logical neutral base. For sensitive skin, test locally first and avoid eyes, mucous membranes and damaged skin.
Sandalwood oil for hair
One drop in a larger amount of hair oil can add a warm scent. Claims about hair growth or treatment of scalp problems are insufficiently substantiated.
Sandalwood in massage oil
Due to its soft scent profile, sandalwood fits well with massage. Combine in low doses with jojoba, almond or argan oil. With lavender, it creates a simple, soft evening blend.
What to look for when buying?
Check the botanical name Santalum album, extraction method, origin and traceability. The term 'sandalwood' is used for multiple species and sometimes synthetic fragrances, making a clear botanical name extra valuable.
Storage and safety
Store in dark glass, cool and tightly closed. Use diluted, not internally based on this guide and stop in case of irritation.
