In het kort

Discover everything about sweet almond oil: what Prunus amygdalus dulcis is, how the oil is made from sweet almonds via cold pressing, how to use it for skin and hair, what to combine it with, and how to store the oil properly.

What is Sweet almond oil?

Sweet almond oil is a plant-based skincare oil offered by PureOil® based on Prunus amygdalus dulcis. The oil is obtained through cold pressing of sweet almonds and originates from Spain. This allows the oil to retain its natural color, scent, and characteristic lipid profile as well as possible. In a skincare routine, sweet almond oil is primarily used as a direct skin oil, hair oil, massage oil, or as a base for mixtures with other plant-based or essential oils.

What makes this oil interesting is that every plant-based oil has a different ratio of fatty acids and natural accompanying substances. This determines, among other things, how rich the oil feels, how quickly it absorbs, and for which type of routine it is practical. A smooth, versatile carrier oil that is easy to mix with essential oils. Do not expect a miracle cure: the value of a good carrier oil lies primarily in mild, simple care and in supporting a pleasant skin and hair feel.

Where does sweet almond oil come from?

The botanical basis of this oil is Prunus amygdalus dulcis. For the PureOil® variant, the raw material is processed via cold pressing of sweet almonds; Spain is listed as the origin on the product page. Origin does not say everything about quality, but it is useful information when you want to compare oils. Freshness, storage, packaging, and processing also influence scent, color, and stability.

A cold-processed oil can differ slightly per harvest. A slightly different golden yellow, green, orange, or brown hue is therefore not automatically a quality problem. The same applies to a natural scent that can vary subtly from batch to batch.

How does sweet almond oil smell and feel?

The scent profile of this oil is neutral to mildly nutty. Because no synthetic perfume is needed to use a plant-based oil, the natural character remains recognizable. On the skin, the oil feels different from a cream: it contains no water phase, and you therefore usually only use a few drops.

Apply the oil preferably thinly to slightly damp skin. This makes it spread more easily and prevents you from using too much. For the face, two to four drops are often more than enough; for arms, legs, or massage, you use more depending on the surface area.

Sweet almond oil for the skin

Sweet almond oil fits into a simple skin routine when you want to use a plant-based oil as a final care step. Cleanse the skin mildly first, leave it slightly damp, and then massage in a small amount. The oil does not provide moisture itself, but can help maintain a comfortable, supple skin feel by providing the skin with lipids.

For the face

For the face, the rule is: start small. Distribute one to three drops between clean fingertips and gently press the oil into the skin. If you have combination or easily oily skin, you can mix sweet almond oil with a lighter oil such as jojoba or grapeseed oil. For dry skin, a slightly richer blend may be pleasant.

For the body

After showering, you can distribute a few drops over damp arms and legs. This is especially practical if you prefer to use perfume-free, minimalist body care. For a massage, you can use the oil pure or combine it with a second carrier oil to adjust the texture and glide.

Sweet almond oil for hair and scalp

Sweet almond oil can also be easily used in hair care. For dry hair ends, rub one or two drops between your palms and smooth them only through the lengths and ends. For a pre-shampoo treatment, you can apply a little more oil, leave it on for twenty to sixty minutes, and then wash it out thoroughly.

If you want to treat the scalp, use a small amount and massage briefly with your fingertips. More oil is not automatically better: too much product can make the hair heavy and often requires multiple washes. In case of itching, redness, wounds, or a known scalp condition, it is wise to have the cause evaluated first instead of just experimenting with oil.

How do you use sweet almond oil as a carrier oil?

A carrier oil is the base in which you can dilute an essential oil. This makes the application more even and lowers the concentration on the skin. For daily cosmetic blends, a low dosage is usually more logical than a strongly scented mix. When using essential oils, always consider the specific maximum skin concentration, age, pregnancy, medication, and sensitivity.

A simple body blend can, for example, consist of 30 ml of sweet almond oil with a very small amount of a suitable essential oil. For the face, you generally choose an even lower concentration. PureOil® does not recommend using essential oils internally based on this guide.

What can you combine sweet almond oil with?

For a lighter texture, you can mix sweet almond oil with jojoba or grapeseed oil. If you want a richer blend, argan and avocado oil fit well as a second base. You can also combine 70% of a light oil with 30% of a richer oil and then assess how your skin or hair reacts to it.

For scent blends, you can add a suitable essential oil, but choose based on both safety and scent. Lavender gives a soft floral direction, bergamot a fresh citrus note, and sandalwood a warmer base. The carrier oil itself does not need to smell strong to form a good base.

Practical routines with sweet almond oil

Quick face oil

Use two drops in the evening on cleansed, still slightly damp skin. Give the oil a few minutes to spread before adding extra product. This way, you will quickly notice if the texture suits your skin.

Hair ends routine

Distribute one drop over both palms and smooth through the last centimeters of dry or towel-dried hair. Always start with less; you can add one drop later.

Massage blend

Mix equal parts sweet almond oil and jojoba oil when you want a smoother, more neutral massage base. Add an essential oil only if you know the safe dosage for that specific oil.

What should you look for when buying sweet almond oil?

Look not only at marketing terms, but at the INCI/botanical name, extraction method, packaging, and traceability. A dark glass bottle helps protect the contents from light. With cold-pressed oils, natural differences in color and scent are normal. A clearly rancid, paint-like, or strongly deviating smell, on the other hand, can indicate oxidation.

The PureOil® product information mentions Prunus amygdalus dulcis, cold pressing of sweet almonds, and Spain as the origin. Every batch is checked for quality and purity according to the product information.

Storage and shelf life

Close the bottle immediately after use, store it in a cool, dark place, and prevent water or dirty pipettes from getting into the oil. Heat, oxygen, and light accelerate oxidation. Especially oils with many unsaturated fatty acids deserve extra care during storage. You may want to note the opening date on the bottle if you use multiple oils at the same time.

Is sweet almond oil safe?

For cosmetic use, a simple plant-based oil is safe for many people to use, but natural ingredients can also cause irritation or an allergic reaction. Therefore, if you have sensitive skin, first test a small amount on a limited area of skin. Do not use on irritated or broken skin and avoid direct contact with the eyes.

Note: In case of a nut allergy, extra caution is wise; test a small patch of skin first or choose a different carrier oil.

In case of persistent skin, hair, or scalp complaints, oil is no replacement for medical diagnostics or treatment.
