What is thyme oil?
Thyme oil is a concentrated essential oil from Thymus vulgaris. The PureOil® variant is steam-distilled from thyme leaves and originates from Spain/France. The scent is fresh, herbal, and slightly warm.
Thyme oil is potent. Furthermore, there are different thyme chemotypes, which means the ratio of key components can vary. This makes product-specific safety information important.
How is thyme oil made?
In steam distillation, volatile aromatic compounds are carried away from the plant material by steam and, after condensation, are separated as essential oil.
What does thyme oil smell like?
The scent is green, herbal, and warm. In a diffuser blend, a single drop is often clearly noticeable.
Thyme oil in aromatherapy
Use thyme primarily for its scent profile. Research into antimicrobial properties often takes place in laboratories and is not evidence that diluted thyme oil treats infections or other medical conditions at home.
Diffuser
Start with one drop and combine with lemon, bergamot, or lavender. Ventilate well and do not use continuously for long periods.
Thyme oil for the skin
Never use undiluted. Depending on the chemotype, thyme can be highly irritating. Choose a low dilution in jojoba or another carrier oil and perform a patch test first.
Thyme oil for hair
You can add a very small amount to a scalp oil for the scent, but avoid making strong claims regarding hair growth or the treatment of scalp issues.
Blending
Lemon or bergamot makes thyme fresher; lavender softens the herbal character; cedarwood or sandalwood provides a warmer base.
Quality and chemotype
Check the botanical name and, if available, chemotype information. The same plant species can have a different chemical profile depending on its origin and cultivation.
Safety
Use low concentrations, never undiluted, and avoid eyes and mucous membranes. Use extra caution during pregnancy, with children, or if you have sensitive skin.
