What is evening primrose oil?
Evening primrose oil is a plant-based care oil derived from the seeds of Oenothera biennis. The PureOil® variety is cold-pressed from evening primrose seeds and originates from China. The oil has a soft, slightly nutty and floral scent profile and is used in skin, hair, nail, and massage care.
Evening primrose oil is particularly interesting as a relatively light to medium-rich seed oil. As with all plant-based oils, the skin feel depends on the natural fatty acid composition, freshness, and storage method. The oil is not a medicine, but it can be a simple, fragrance-free care step.
How is evening primrose oil made?
In cold pressing, the seeds are mechanically processed without exposing the oil to high processing temperatures. This ensures that the natural character, color, and scent are preserved as much as possible. Small batch-to-batch variations are normal.
Evening primrose oil for the skin
Use a few drops on clean, slightly damp skin. The oil adds lipids and can therefore contribute to a supple skin feel. For the face, one to three drops are usually sufficient. If you have skin that tends to get shiny quickly, you can mix the oil with jojoba or grapeseed oil.
For dry skin
Apply the oil after a water-based serum or on damp skin. This allows you to use the oil as a finishing step rather than a replacement for moisture.
For the body
After showering, distribute a small amount over your arms and legs. For massage, you can mix evening primrose oil with sweet almond or jojoba oil.
Evening primrose oil for hair and scalp
For dry ends, you can smooth one or two drops through the lengths of your hair. As a pre-shampoo oil, you can leave a small amount on for twenty to sixty minutes and then wash it out. For the scalp: use sparingly and stop if you notice irritation.
Combining with other oils
Evening primrose oil combines well with jojoba, grapeseed, argan, and avocado. A blend of a light and a richer oil can feel more pleasant than a single oil on its own. If you want to add essential oil, keep the concentration low and follow the safety guidelines for that specific essential oil.
Practical routines
Evening routine
Apply two drops to slightly damp skin and massage in gently.
Hair ends
Distribute one drop over your hands and smooth only through the bottom centimeters of the hair.
Massage blend
Mix evening primrose oil 1:1 with jojoba oil for a lighter, more spreadable base.
What to look for when buying?
Check the botanical name, extraction method, origin, and packaging. Dark glass protects against light. A natural seed oil can vary in color and scent, but a clearly rancid or paint-like smell is a sign to stop using the oil.
Storage
Evening primrose oil is relatively sensitive to oxidation. Therefore, store the bottle in a cool, dark place and keep it tightly closed. Do not let water enter the bottle and consider noting the opening date.
Safe use
For sensitive skin, first test on a small area. Avoid eyes and damaged skin. In case of persistent skin or scalp complaints, oil is not a substitute for medical assessment.
