What is wheat germ oil?
Wheat germ oil is a rich plant-based oil derived from Triticum vulgare germ oil. PureOil® specifies cold pressing of wheat germs and Germany as its origin. The oil is golden yellow to amber in color and has a mild, grainy, and slightly nutty scent.
Due to its rich texture, wheat germ oil is often combined with lighter oils in small amounts. For the face and fine hair, less is usually better.
How is wheat germ oil made?
The germ of the wheat kernel contains oil that can be extracted via cold pressing. This method limits high heat and helps preserve the natural character of the oil.
Wheat germ oil for the skin
Use one drop on the face or mix with jojoba or grapeseed oil. On the body, you can be slightly more generous, especially on areas that feel dry. Preferably apply to slightly damp skin.
Rich facial oil
Mix one part wheat germ oil with three or four parts jojoba. This creates a less heavy blend.
Wheat germ oil for hair
Use a minimal amount on dry ends or as part of a pre-shampoo oil treatment. Due to the full texture, too much oil can weigh the hair down.
Blending
Jojoba, grapeseed, and sweet almond are logical partners. For a very dry body blend, avocado or argan oil can also be added.
Practical routines
Face
One drop of wheat germ oil mixed with a few drops of jojoba on damp skin.
Hair
Mix one drop into a larger amount of light hair oil and apply only to the ends.
Massage
Use wheat germ as a smaller component in a massage blend to enrich the texture.
Wheat allergy and cosmetic use
Wheat germ oil is a cosmetic oil ingredient and is not the same as consuming wheat, but people with a wheat allergy or highly reactive skin should be cautious. Do not automatically assume that every wheat germ oil product is 'gluten-free' without specific product information.
Quality and storage
Pay attention to the botanical name, cold pressing, dark packaging, and normal natural scent. Store in a cool, dark place and close immediately after each use.
Safety
Perform a patch test first. If you have a known wheat allergy, you may want to seek professional advice if necessary before using the oil.
