What is neem oil?
Neem oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of Azadirachta indica. The PureOil® variant is cold-pressed, originates from India, and has a strong, herbal, and earthy scent. The oil is used in cosmetic routines for skin, hair, scalp, massage, and DIY products.
Its scent and composition are intense. This makes neem different from many neutral carrier oils. Therefore, always start with a small amount and, if necessary, mix the oil with a milder, more neutral base oil.
How is neem oil made?
Neem seeds are cold-pressed. The natural oil can range from dark golden to brownish and has a strong odor. This pronounced scent is not, in itself, a sign of spoilage.
Neem oil for the skin
Use a small amount. For the face, mixing it with jojoba or grapeseed oil may be more pleasant than using it pure. Always perform a patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin.
For the body
You can mix neem oil with a more neutral body or massage oil. This softens both the scent and the texture.
Neem oil for hair and scalp
Mix a small amount into jojoba, almond, or argan oil. Massage briefly into the scalp or apply to the ends of the hair, washing out if necessary. Oil does not treat medical scalp conditions; persistent issues require professional evaluation.
What can you realistically expect?
Online, neem is often associated with powerful antimicrobial or insect-repellent claims. Laboratory findings are not automatically evidence for the treatment of skin problems in humans. For reliable insect protection, use a registered product that has been tested for that purpose.
Combining
Jojoba, grapeseed, and sweet almond are practical oils for diluting neem. Start, for example, with one part neem to three or four parts of a more neutral oil and adjust based on skin feel and scent.
Practical routines
Scalp blend
Mix a small amount of neem with jojoba, massage briefly, and then wash out.
Body oil
Use neem as a small component in a larger carrier oil blend.
DIY
Work cleanly, make small batches, and note the ratios used.
Recognizing quality
Look for Azadirachta indica seed oil, cold-pressing, and dark packaging. The natural scent is strong, but a distinctly rancid or chemically off-putting smell is a reason not to use the product.
Storage
Store in a cool, dark place and keep tightly sealed. Heat and oxygen accelerate oxidation.
Safety
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use internally based on this guide. Perform a patch test first and stop if irritation occurs.
