What is ginger oil?
Ginger oil is an essential oil from Zingiber officinale root oil. The PureOil® variant is made via steam distillation of ginger root and originates from India/China. The scent is warm, dry, spicy, and slightly pungent.
How is ginger oil made?
The root is steam distilled. The volatile aromatic compounds are separated from the water and form the essential oil. It smells different from fresh, juicy ginger: drier, woodier, and more concentrated.
What does ginger oil smell like?
Ginger oil is warm and spicy, but usually less sharp than fresh ginger juice. The oil combines well with citrus, wood, and other spice scents.
Ginger oil in aromatherapy
Use primarily for the scent. Traditional applications or laboratory research do not mean that ginger oil treats medical conditions at home.
Diffuser
Start with one to three drops and combine with, for example, orange, bergamot, or sandalwood.
Scent combinations
Warm citrus
Ginger + orange.
Fresh spicy
Ginger + bergamot + a little lavender.
Deep
Ginger + patchouli + sandalwood.
Ginger oil for the skin
Always use diluted. A concentration that is too high can cause a warm or irritating sensation. Mix with jojoba or another carrier oil and test locally first.
Massage
A very small amount of ginger can give a warm scent to massage oil. Do not use on damaged skin and avoid sensitive areas.
Ginger oil for hair
Use at most as a fragrant addition to a highly diluted hair oil. Claims about guaranteed hair growth are insufficiently substantiated.
Quality and storage
Check for Zingiber officinale root oil, steam distillation, and dark packaging. Store in a cool, dark place and keep tightly closed.
Safety
Dilute for skin use. Stop in case of warmth, redness, or irritation, and do not use internally based on this guide.
