What is pine oil?
Pine oil is an essential oil from the needles of Pinus sylvestris. The PureOil® variant is made via steam distillation of pine needles and comes from Austria/France. The scent is fresh, green, woody, and invigorating.
How is pine oil made?
Steam passes through the needles and carries away volatile aromatic compounds. After cooling, the essential oil is separated from the water. Due to natural variation, the scent profile can differ subtly per batch.
What does pine oil smell like?
Pine oil often evokes associations with forest air, resin, and fresh needles. The oil is fresher and greener than cedarwood and less creamy than sandalwood.
Pine oil in aromatherapy
Use primarily for scent experience. A fresh forest scent can be suitable for a diffuser or wellness routine, but that does not make the oil a treatment for respiratory infections or other conditions.
Diffuser
Use two to four drops, depending on the size of the diffuser and room. Combine with lemon, bergamot, eucalyptus, lavender, or cedarwood.
Scent blends
Forest blend
Pine + cedarwood + bergamot.
Fresh blend
Pine + lemon + eucalyptus.
Soft blend
Pine + lavender + a small amount of sandalwood.
Pine oil for the skin
Use only diluted in a carrier oil. Test locally first. Oxidized essential oils can increase the risk of skin irritation, so proper storage is important.
Pine oil for hair
A small amount can provide a fresh scent to a hair or scalp oil. Never use pure on the scalp.
Quality and storage
Check for Pinus sylvestris leaf oil, steam distillation, and dark packaging. Keep the bottle tightly closed and store in a cool place, away from sunlight.
Safety
Dilute, test locally, and do not use internally based on this guide. Do not use oil that is clearly oxidized or smells strongly altered.
