In het kort

Complete guide to lemon oil: cold pressing, fresh scent, diffuser, phototoxicity, skin use, blends and storage.

What is lemon oil?

Lemon oil is a citrus oil from the peel of Citrus limon. The PureOil® variant is cold-pressed from lemon peels and originates from Italy/Spain. The scent is bright, fresh, sparkling, and distinctly citrusy.

How is lemon oil made?

Unlike many steam-distilled essential oils, lemon oil is often mechanically pressed from the peel. Cold pressing allows both volatile aromatic compounds and other naturally occurring peel components to end up in the oil. This is relevant for skin safety.

What does lemon oil smell like?

Lemon is a classic top note: fresh, easily recognizable, and light. In blends, it provides immediate clarity, but the scent evaporates faster than heavy wood or resin notes.

Lemon oil in aromatherapy

Use the oil primarily for its fresh sensory experience. Claims that lemon oil treats diseases or "detoxifies" the body are not supported by the mere fact that laboratory research studies aromatic components.

Diffuser

Use a few drops according to the diffuser manual. Lemon combines well with lavender, rosemary, peppermint, and cedarwood.

Fresh scent blends

Lemon + lavender

A fresh, soft, and accessible combination.

Lemon + rosemary

Herbal and bright, pleasant as a fresh daytime blend.

Lemon + cedarwood

A contrast between light citrus and warm wood tones.

Lemon oil for the skin

Always use diluted. Cold-pressed lemon oil can contain phototoxic components. This means that UV light on a recently treated area of skin can cause a reaction. Therefore, follow product-specific sun and UV guidelines and, if necessary, choose applications that do not remain on skin exposed to the sun.

Lemon oil for hair

One drop can be added to a hair oil for its scent. Do not use undiluted on the scalp and avoid strong claims regarding hair growth or dandruff treatment.

Quality and storage

Check for Citrus limon peel oil, cold pressing, and dark packaging. Citrus oil oxidizes after opening; therefore, close tightly, store in a cool place, and do not use if the scent becomes clearly stale or unusual.

Safe use

Dilute, avoid eyes and mucous membranes, and do not use internally based on this guide. Take phototoxicity into account with cold-pressed lemon oil.
